Summer a peak period for Siun sote’s veterinarians: Statutory and urgent tasks to be a priority

The demand for public veterinary services organised by Siun sote increases each summer, as people take part in more activities with animals and more accidents happen. Other acute situations during summer and holiday periods, such as snake bites, also keep veterinarians busy. For this reason, during the summer, veterinary centres focus on statutory basic animal health services and on ensuring the availability of urgent veterinary assistance.

During the summer, Siun sote’s veterinary centres may not be able to carry out all non-urgent procedures for healthy animals, such as dogs’ official X-ray examinations for the Finnish Kennel Club. Customers of veterinary services who need non-urgent services should be prepared to wait longer than usual, and in the case of non-statutory services they may be advised to contact a private veterinarian.

Veterinary services will otherwise operate normally, and a good amount of summer substitutes have been hired for veterinary services. Northern Karelia’s Environmental health service, which is part of Siun sote, is responsible for public veterinary services in all of the region’s municipalities and cities with the exception of Heinävesi.
